End of the Year Blatherings

I always get a bit sentimental this time of year. So here goes. I really want to congratulate you - my patients - for just keeping your nose to the grindstone. For keeping your appointments week after week, some of you for more than 10 years. ( You are the healthy ones. . . because we can find the bad things even before they happen. ) First of all, it takes guts to make that first appointment with me because you don't really know what the heck you are getting yourself into. Most of you have just heard of me and what I do and maybe some of you have visited my website. Since I am referral only - I don't advertise anywhere - someone has had to tell you a bit about me but I am still a big question mark. Secondly, once you have made your way into see me, it takes commitment and intention just to do the recommended program which may include 1) eliminating your allergens 2) swallowing all the damn pills and 3) changing your beloved lifestyles. So, let's discuss these three just a bit.

First of all, sometimes it's really hard to eliminate your allergens, to "give up" stuff that seems to make your life go round. Life is hard enough without making drastic changes and those 3 cups of coffee daily or that cigarette just makes you feel good (momentarily). Let's face it, food makes most of us happy. Yet paradoxically, many of you have found that life becomes much easier and much happier when you make the committment to eliminate the foods that are causing your bowel disturbances, headaches, skin rashes, brain fog, muscle aches and pains, depression, etc. ad infinitum.

I find that when I am muscle testing my 100 or so foods, the major disbelieving groans come when I tell you that you are sensitive to wheat. "Everything has wheat in it!" The second major groan comes with garlic. "How can I possibly cook without garlic?"

When I am muscle testing for dybiosis ( ie. DYS-functional BIO-logy or bugs in your body that don't belong there) many of you will ask me where you got that parasite I found, or the yeast or the chronic bacteria or the heavy metals. I really don't know for sure - it just happens. It has nothing to do with how clean your house is, although it may have a lot to do with your pets. And, it has nothing to do with how many times a day you shower. We just live in a polluted world, that is increasingly becoming smaller and smaller due to ease of travel and permeable borders.

Your parasite may have come from a restaurant where a third world person has handled your food and has unwittingly bestowed upon you the gift of an exotic parasite in that delicious soup du jour. Your intestinal discomfort could have come from kissing your dog after the two of you took a hike in the woods where s/he drank from a creek. For example, I have seen many cases of giardia start this way. Or you could have just returned from what you thought was a very healthy trip to San Franciso or any town on a body of water, and noticed that you now have an annoying little cough that just won't go away. Simply breathing the air with the droplets of water may have given you parasites in your lungs.

Many of you seem to not believe the results of the testing ("This is witchcraft, doc!") but, to your credit, you go along with it. You may have no idea how I come up with these things, yet you trust me, you trust your own intuition, you do the program and whaddyaknow, you start to feel better. You have more energy, you sleep better, you are less depressed, your skin looks healthier, your eyes clearer and you lose your tummy. You find yourself loving the day more, you feel moments of joy and dare I say, you are much happier.

Which sequences nicely into swallowing all the damn pills: Yep, this is a hard one. Let me just assure you that no one likes to swallow lots of pills. Not even me. I will do anything to take powders or tinctures so I can just jam everything into a morning smoothie which ends up tasting horrible, but I just choke it down. You make the commitement to health and so do I. And taking targeted supplements is one way to get well and stay well. I have a patient who swallows maybe 40-50 supplements daily and hates everyone of them, yet she says "I feel so much better when I do and it's insurance against whatever is out there ready to pounce, so I just do it."

Sometimes your body revolts and simply will not take a pill that day so what do you do when this happens? I have come to believe that this is your body's way of telling you "Slow down, I need to take a day off and absorb what you have given me." This is why I suggest you take one day off a week from all your supplements.

Lifestyle changes seem to be the hardest for me and for others. I have a wheat allergy - extremely common in us Northern European hybrids - so I have to be on guard always for wheat - in products, food served at a dinner party or out at a restaurant. Sometimes it's just impossible to avoid wheat, so I carry a product called Glutenzyme which helps a bit to stop any sideffects of the wheat ingestion. Everyone has different reactions to their allergens, but, for example, if I eat wheat, I lose my voice immediately, and later ( a delayed reaction) I will get achy all over. Wheat is clearly a toxin for me, as are your food allergies. Other more general lifestyle changes include exercise, losing or gaining weight if you need to, reducing stress, eating healthier and giving your body the right fuel for your metabolic type. Then there are more specific lifestyle changes which you and I determine according to your needs.

So, start now. For the newbies who may be reading this, make an appointment to see me, find out what's wrong with you and how you could improve your health for the healthiest you in 2005. At least start with a 2 week cleanse. See www.drbea.com/ Hot News Archives/Get ready! A 2004 Cleanse for a New You! For my old established and beloved patients, ditto: See me, find out what's going on, and certainly do the cleanse to start the new year out right.

Much love and health to you all in 2005.
