Really Bad Stuff: Part II

In Really Bad Stuff: Part I, I discussed why Splenda is bad for you; in short, the chlorine molecule attached to the sucrose (sugar) acts like a free radical and wreaks havoc on your immune system creating many reported symptoms. Here's some more Really Bad Stuff.

Smart Balance: The new margerine which is said to "improve your cholesterol ratio, has no transfats and is not hydrogenated" sounds great on the surface except for two problems: 1) Smart Balance is made with soy and canola oils, both of which are genetically engineered. Plus, non-organic soy is contaminated with Monsanto's potent herbicide, Round-up. Secondly, it lists vitamin E as the dl-a-tocopheryl which is synthetic, and is known to counter the effects of the good, natural E which is d-alpha-tocopherol. You really can't fool Mother Nature. Use real, organic butter.

Canola Oil: Avoid it because it is genetically engineered. No one knows what GMO's do in the long run, so until we know, it is best to avoid any GMOs. Here's the scary part: When you GM any food, you can accidentally add antigens that can trigger life-threatening allergies in people who are not expecting it, like the remnants of peanuts escaping into a grain.

Corn: About 40% of corn is now genetically engineered to produce a nasty toxin derived from the bacteria bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) that kills the corn borer worm. Bt is a problem for some people who will experience odd symptoms such as just feeling unwell, fainting, dizziness, IBS etc. Make sure you read labels and buy only the un-GMO corn products. If it doesn't say No GMOs on the label, call the manufacturer to make sure.

Soy: Eighty percent of soy is now genetically modified and loaded with Round-up pesticides. These kinds of pesticides are estrogen mimics so are harmful to any male or to females with hormonal cancer risk. To make matters worse, researchers have found that the genistein in soy can act like a fertilizer for cancer (as can sugar). Never give soy to your boykids and it's probably wise not to give soy to any child. ( Cancer Research, 2001, Carcinogenesis, 2001, J Nutr, 2001)

Food irradiation: Watch out for names like "Sure Beam" and "cold pasturization" and the cute little radura symbol (on irradiated foods) which looks as healthy as a fresh sprout with its little green petals under a semi-circle. Gamma rays will destroy e.coli and salmonella, but not viruses, fungi, protozoa and other bacteria and while gamma rays are killing only two of hundreds of pathogens, it will also destroy up to 96% of the vitamins and nutrients in food.

Radiation creates unique radiolytic products, called URPs, which have never been recognized by the body before. Since URPs are "not me", they can trigger autoimmune disorders and cancer. Farm animals who are fed irradiated grain had ruptured hearts, weakened immune systems and marked degenerative diseases. Irradiation is truly criminal: It is inevitable that irradiation will work its way UNLABELED into our foods, so we will not even be in choice about it. Sigh. My suggestion: Just keep yourself as healthy as possible.

Silicon: Formerly, silicon was used only in breast implants, but now it is widely used in minor cosmetic surgery in thousands upon thousands of men and women to flatten out wrinkles, to plump up sagging skin and for chin and cheek implants. It is used in TMJ and other joints, in silicon-coated pacemaker wires and for penile and testicular devices. Silicon greatly irritates the body and the immune system and can create a host of symptoms. Over 50% of people who have silicon of some variety in their bodies complain of fatigue, joint pain, headaches, insomnia, rashes, hair loss, swelling, numbness. My suggestion: Don't. You're cute just the way you are.

Farmed Fish: PCB levels are roughly ten-fold higher in farmed fish which could be dangerous for all of us, but esp. for children under 5 and for pregnant women.

Olestra: I probably don't have to mention this Really Bad Stuff to you, but you may not know that olestra is found in Pringles. Olestra can cause an "oily fecal incontinence" (something I really would not want to deal with) and also stops absorption of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E,K, Q10, Alpha Lipoic, Beta Carotene and all the EFA's.

Chicken McNuggets: These McChickens are fed nearly a continual diet of antibiotics throughout their pesticide-exposed lifetimes, but when slaughtered are still full of bacteria and cancer viruses. These unhealthy chickens are then finely ground up. The skin - which holds most of the pesticides, heavy metals, antibiotic residues and chemicals - is included. Then they add MSG, bread, batter, more chemicals and partially hydrogenated soybean oil. Then the McNuggets are deep fried in more hydrogenated soybean oil or vegetable oil. No wonder our kids are fat and unhealthy.

Accutane: Users of Accutane for acne are told not to get pregnant when they are on Accutane because of the strong possibility of birth defects. What most people don't know is that this risk could be permanent with babies born years later with disfiguring deformities and an increased risk for childhood cancers. Try eating a grain-free, sugar-free, junk-free diet for acne.

Coca-Cola: Factoids: In many states, the highway patrol carries two gallons of Coke in their trunk to remove blood from the highway after a car accident. Did you know that you can put a steak into a bowl of Coke and it will be dissolved and gone in two days? The phosphoric acid with a very acid pH of 2.8 can dissolve a nail in 4 days. This is what a steady supply of Coke will do to your bones, too. Uses for Coke: 1) To remove rust spots from your chrome bumpers. 2) To remove grease from clothes: Pour a can of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add detergent and run through the regular cycle. 3) To clean the corrosion from your car battery terminals. 4) To clean your toilet bowl: Pour one can into your toilet bowl. Flush after one hour and most of your difficult stains will be removed.

I will address the problems with MILK in Really Bad Stuff: Part III.
